Small Is Beautiful
When Zoe from Toby Tiger rang us up to see if we could fit them in at the last minute we naturally said yes. Reason number one: as a small company just starting out you don't say no to work. Reason number two: with only two of us involved, rather than dozens of staff and contract photographers to organise, we can easily juggle our schedule when clients need us to. Reason number three: their range of fun and colourful clothes for little ones is adorable and just the sort of products we love to photograph. Helping out clients and shooting fun stuff is why we opened the studio in the first place.
Keeping It Local
After setting up in London to great success, Zoe moved to Brighton and opened her first shop in 1997. A year later she had her son Toby and the company became Toby Tiger, later moving to bigger North Laine premises and now supplying customers and retailers all round the world. Having the shop on Gardner Street means the company retains that local independent feel and that's part of their appeal. Working with Zoe and her team you feel that they absolutely believe in what they do. With 80% of their new range now made from certified organic cotton (and the aim to reach 100% very soon) they are also showing a global responsibility, which for a company clothing our new generations is great to see.
Getting The Colour Right
So back to the shoot and we've put in some long days but it's been a lot of fun and an opportunity to iron out some of the processes on big jobs like this. It has also highlighted how versatile our study set up is. Being able to photograph items from above in the cyclorama is fantastically handy. The ceiling track allows the lights to be positioned perfectly, close enough for the flash make those vibrant colours really pop yet they don't get in the way of positioning the clothes or camera. Once shot we have the mammoth task of colour correcting everything to ensure the colours on the images are true to life. This is so important for e-commerce photography. If a customer receives their order and it's a different colour to the picture they saw on your website then they won't be happy. That's why we are so meticulous about this stage of the process.
Agreeing The Right Format
One thing to always agree before any job is the correct image format(s) your clients require and organising your filing to make sure they're easy to sort and check. You don't want to deliver a project and find out afterwards that something's been missed. Catalogue everything correctly, tick off as you go and you'll pick up anything missing ahead of time and can get it in and shot before the end of the job. It may be boring but don't underrate how important methodical filing is. It will save you a whole heap of time in the long run.
Well we still have a few more long days and late nights ahead of us in the studio but the images shot so far are looking great. We're looking forward to having Toby Tiger back in the studio with more clothing to shoot soon and if you like what you've seen check out their website here.
